It’s no secret that preschoolers love to play in, on, or beside water. Without doubt water can be soothing, tactile, exciting, and liberating, but it’s not always possible, practical or safe. That’s where pretend pond play comes in…
Pretend Pond Play
At our home we have a small round blue mat which is perfect for this activity. The girls lay it on the lounge room floor, and collect everything from dry bath toys, fake flowers, fabric remnants and paper lily pads and start assembling a magical kingdom in the sea. We’re all about mermaids here at the moment, so last week my daughters created a mermaid pond, and spent an hour of uninterrupted play making and remaking the pond while Mummy-mermaid taught Baby-mermaid to swim.
You don’t have to have a round blue rug to join in the fun.
Here’s a few other ideas you can try;
- Take a blue tea towel and throw a pool party beside your dolls house, using linen napkins for resort-towels the dolls can sun-bake on.
- Blue beach towels make terrific aquariums for bath-toy-beasties to lurk in; get creative and make some rocks and coral to add to the ‘tank’.
- A large blue picnic rug is ocean-enough to sail your yachts, go fishing, or launch your pirate galleons; let them all share the seas in harmony, or stage a battle to defend their island-cushions.
There are no limits to this preschooler project – use what you have, and let your children’s imagination do the rest. Go on… dive in… so to speak!
