Wet marker salt art

Grab your washable markers, a spray bottle and some sea salt and you’ve got yourself the ingredients for a fun preschool art activity. You don’t need watercolors or painting skills to make art that looks like a painting. Your preschoolers can have fun coloring, making their own designs and then turning them into magical art pieces that look like water color paintings.

This is a simple example, however, any kind of drawing will work. Please make sure you are using washable markers as they tend to run the best when wet.

Materials you need:

  • Washable markers
  • Paper
  • Spray bottle of water
  • Sea salt

How to make your own wet marker salt art

  1. Draw a picture on the paper using the markers.
  2. Spray paper with water bottle, make sure to cover thoroughly with water, but don’t over saturate.
  3. Sprinkle salt on the picture.
  4. Let Dry.
  5. Dust off dried salt and enjoy your new artwork.

This is also a fun project to make without the salt, You can create some neat water effect with the markers and different kinds of paper and color. Experiment with different sizes of salt, levels of water and paper types to see what kind of art creations you can make. You can try this same technique of using salt with water color paints, simply sprinkle the salt onto the painting before the paint dries.
